Classic Sugar Cookies Recipe

Ingredients

    • 200g granulated sugar (7oz)
    • 250g unsalted butter (9oz)
    • 1 large egg
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
    • 450g all-purpose flour (1lb)

    Variations

Almond Flavor: Replace the vanilla extract with almond extract for a different flavor profile.

Citrus Twist: For a citrus variation, add the zest of 2 oranges, lemons, or limes and the juice of 1 fruit at step 3.

    Instructions

    1. Preparation: Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature for best results. This recipe involves approximately 25 minutes of active preparation and baking, plus a chilling period of atleast 1 hour.

    2. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until the mixture is smooth and fluffy.

    3. Incorporate Egg and Vanilla: Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter-sugar mixture. Beat until well combined.

    4. Add Flour: Gradually add half of the flour, while mixing thoroughly. Then add the remaining flour, continuing to mix and knead until a soft dough forms.

    5. Chill Dough: Divide the dough into two equal portions. Wrap each portion in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.

    6. Roll and Cut: After chilling, roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to a thickness of about 5mm. Cut out shapes using cookie cutters. Dust the dough, rolling pin, and cutters with a little flour if needed.

    7. Bake: Preheat your oven to 175°C (347°F). Place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Let the cookies cool completely before decorating or serving.

Essential Tips for  MrCookieCutter Cookie Cutters

    1. Coat with Flour: Dust your cutter with flour to prevent the dough from sticking. If the dough is getting stuck, try chilling it in the fridge or rolling it out thinner. Our cutters work best with dough rolled to a 5mm thickness.

    2. Adjust Dough Consistency: If your dough is too dry and cracks while rolling, add a small splash of milk or water to improve its texture.

    3. Use the Right Flour: For the best results, avoid using raising agents in your dough and stick to plain flour instead of self-raising flour.

    4. Prevent Misshapen Cookies: Roll your dough directly onto prepared baking paper and carefully remove the excess dough around the cut shapes to maintain their form.

    5. Cleaning Your Cutters: Soak your MrCookieCutterShop cookie cutters in warm, soapy water and use a brush to remove any dough remnants. When dry, store them in our reusable packaging!
